What Makes a Quilt a Modern Quilt?
Modern Quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. There are several characteristics that may help identify a modern quilt.
- use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color
- improvisational piecing
- minimalism (including using low volume prints)
- expansive negative space
- alternate grid work
- "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs
- Maximalism is an emerging trend (the use of saturated color and little or no negative space)
Modern quilters use all types of quilting fabrics. There are no 'rules' about fabrics that cannot be used. Quilters have successfully combined the newest prints and solids with fabrics they've had in their stash for years. And, fabric manufacturers are even updating batiks to appeal to the modern quilter.
